In Year 7 and for some Year 8s, English is delivered in the Bungalow by Miss Bastock and Mr F Foster. The rest of the school have English lessons in the English room with Mr Boon, Miss Grace and (for some groups) Mr F Foster. Both classrooms have a specially chosen library of reading books with a range of fiction and non-fiction books for a range of abilities and interests. The boys are able to read about lots of their favourite topics and genres including horror stories, science fiction, autobiographies and sports books – we are even able to order reading books on request! The Bungalow has beanbags to settle down and read on, whilst the English room has comfy chairs and a quiet room for individual reading with no distractions!
In lessons, all students develop their reading, writing and speaking & listening skills, based on a range of topics which are carefully chosen to match the boys’ interests so that they enjoy English lessons whilst learning – e.g. celebrity autobiographies, writing reviews of their favourites movies or video games, and writing in a range of genres such as horror, science fiction and murder mystery. In Year 10 and 11, the boys start preparing for their GCSE in English Language.
